In de jaren 50 werd de mechanische injectie toegepast in auto's, onder andere in de Mercedes 300SL "Gull wing" (W198), 300SC (W188), type 300 (W186) en 220SE "Ponton" (W128).

Sinds 1973 bestaat de K-Jetronic, dat is een mechanisch hydraulisch brandstof injectiesysteem.
De hoeveelheid ingespoten brandstof is alleen afhankelijk van de stand hoeveelheid aangezogen lucht, zonder invloed van de stand van de inlaat kleppen, en gebeurt continu.
Vandaar de naam K-Jetronic (K van kontinuierlich, Duits voor continu).

De KE-Jetronic is een met een elektronische besturing uitgebreide K-Jetronic.
Daardoor is bijvoorbeeld integratie van een lambda sonde mogelijk.
KE staat voor kontinuierlich, elektrisch.
