Er zijn twee systemen voor de gordelspanners gebruikt, eerst de linker, later de rechter:gordelspanners.gifBij de linker wordt bij een aanrijding een patroon (2) ontstoken, de gassen die daardoor ontstaan blazen een kogel (4) door een buis (5) die met vloeistof gevuld is, de vloeistof laat een turbinewiel (7) ronddraaien die daardoor de gordel (6) strak trekt.
Bij de rechter wordt bij een aanrijding een patroon (1) ontstoken, de gassen die daardoor ontstaan blazen een zuiger (4) door een buis (5), aan de zuiger is een kabel bevestigd die om een schijf (2) gewikkeld is, via een koppeling (3) wordt daardoor de gordel (6) strak getrokken.
De elektronica die een aanrijding constateert zit pakweg onder de asbak en een noodstroomvoorziening in de voetenruimte van de bijrijder.
